Morphological and physiological responses of Quercus robur and Quercus petraea to drought preceded of not by waterlogging episode

Réponses morphologiques et physiologiques de Quercus robur et de Quercus petraea à la sécheresse précédée ou non d’une période d’ennoyage

The temperate forests are more and more subject to extreme climate-related events.
The forecasts announce an increase of situations of soil water-logging by the spring rainfall and an increase of drought episodes during the summer season. Quercus robur is considered as water-logging-tolerance of the ground and Quercus petraea as drought-tolerance. We reproduced conditions of drought preceded or not by water-logging episode on young Q. robur and Q. petraea cultivated in 30 l pots. Our results showed the sensitivity of Q. petraea to post-budburst water-logging with a diameter growth cessation of the trunk, a lower root and
shoot biomass and a bigger quantity of dead roots. The drought strongly reduced the relative transpirations, the trunk radial growth and leaf water potential in particular of Q. robur.
Besides, the succession of both stresses did not seem to affect significantly their cambial
growth, biomasses, leaf water potential or LMA in comparison with trees having undergone only the drought, contrary to our hypotheses

Key words : water logging, drought, Q. robur, Q. petraea, cambial growth, LMA, relative
transpiration, biomass.
